► Parness Hayom – Benefactor for a Day
In our daily morning prayers, we recite the Mishna “aylu devarim” which describes the value of performing specific mitzvot (commandments). These consist of the importance of morning prayers, respecting one’s parents, extending loving-kindness, showing respect for the living and giving respect to the deceased. The list concludes with the striking statement “Talmud Torah K’neged Koolam… The study of Torah precedes them all.” To perform mitzvot, one must first learn them from the Torah.
In addition to the recitation of the Mourner’s Kaddish, one is urged to devote time to the study of Torah on the Yahrzeit date of a loved one, thus helping to elevate the soul of the departed. The highest honour any individual can receive derives from Torah study or deeds that make Torah study possible.
